Things to see and do close to Casa Marchi

Bagni di Lucca is our local town which is listed in many books as one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany with its many bars, shops and eateries. It is within easy access to public transport and roads to major tourist destinations and the Versilian coast. It is approximately an hours drive to Pisa and Florence. The San Gemignano and Chianti areas are approximately and hour and a half away and the beautiful walled city of Lucca is only a half hour drive away.

There is plenty to do in Bagni di Lucca and it's nearby villages. You can relax and unwind in the local thermal spas or go for a swim in the public swimming pool or for the more adventurous, hiking day trips can be arranged where you can take a hike up Prato, our neighbouring mountain which will take you through historical towns and provide spectacular mountain scenery and visits to local vineyards. Or if you prefer you can hire a quad bike to explore the area. Horse riding is also available and there are plenty of shops selling traditional Italian products. For shoe lovers there is a well established Italian shoe shop with a large selection of beautiful Italian shoes and boots, not to be missed.

Bagni Di Lucca offers good food, a selection of local wines, olive oils, speciality cheeses, street market days, access to banks and public transport and within close proximity to many other villages and places of interest. You are guaranteed to always get a good cup of coffee and delicious speciality cakes and treats in local coffee shops and traditional Italian food in the local restaurants and eateries.   For those men who would like to try a truly traditional Italian experience, the local barber is well worth a visit.

You can take a stroll through nearby Montefegatesi, through the village houses to Dante's memorial and enjoy a cup of coffee in the local coffee shop on your way down, or visit nearby Barga (twinned with Edinburgh) which offers excellent shopping facilities, music and entertainment.

Or you may wish to visit Carrara, a large mountain top town where you can walk into a cave of pure marble and wonder through the mining museum.

Every year, in August, Gombereto hosts the Medieval Festa.  Enjoy the festivities with good food, wine, music and theatre.  You can watch a classical Italian flag throwing ceremony, performances by fire eaters and a candle lit outdoor theatre production.  It is an evening of fun and entertainment.

Local beaches and rivers provide one with an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine in secluded secret hideaway spots away from the main tourist destinations.

For Ski and winter sport lovers - Abetone ski resort is only 45 minutes away with alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding on offer. Abetone is situated on the mountain pass between Tuscany and Emilia on the main Abetone/Brenero Road.

After a full day's skiing you can return to Casa Marchi for a delicious 3 course meal prepared by Roy - See Optional Extras.
